Pebble House is committed to being mindful of our carbon footprint by working in a sustainable way. We continue to develop and improve on our sustainability and commitment to caring for the environment. We are also committed to meeting legislative requirements

Purchasing and Suppliers

  • Visitor attraction leaflets are available for our guests from us
  • Newspapers are delivered from local newsagent in the village
  • Floral displays for guests are supplied from St Austell
  • We support and encourage guests to visit nearby suppliers who we use to support the local area and keep travel to a minimum
  • Arrange home deliveries of products via local suppliers where possible
  • Garden plants and flowers locally delivered
  • Cornish bottled water locally delivered
  • Award winning bacon & sausages locally delivered
  • Teas locally delivered
  • Wines locally delivered
  • Local Knightor wines and sparkling wines from St Austell (6 miles)
  • Fish delivered from village or collected by us on foot from Mevagissey
  • Eggs locally delivered
  • Conserves, jams. Marmalade from Boddingtons in Mevagissey
  • Vegetables and fruit from St Austell
  • Purchase and use Cornish :- Yogurts; Milk; Butter; Clotted cream
  • Granola is homemade
  • A copy of locally delivered Cornwall Living is available in all guest areas

Energy

  • All ceiling lighting operates on movement sensor PIR
  • Outside lighting operates on movement sensor PIR or timers
  • Over 95% low energy bulbs used
  • Bathrooms operate with separate fan to ceiling lights
  • One, low energy bulb light, left on over night
  • Central heating – all our radiators have thermostatic valves, for guests to adjust heat accordingly, room by room
  • The three boilers are energy efficient, fully lagged and operate on timers to ensure hot water is not always being made
  • Separate central heating and water system used in personal side to guest side to further conserve energy therefore two boilers are turned off when we are closed to guests
  • In quieter months, only guests room being used have TRV’s left open
  • The property is triple glazed at the front (sea facing) and double glazed at the rear
  • 150mm insulation in the roof
  • All pipes are fully lagged
  • Log fire only lit on cooler days
  • Minimise usage of private vehicles
  • Solar/UV blinds used in Guest breakfast room
  • All appliances minimum A Rated +++
  • Kitchen fans & insect catcher turned off when not required
  • No non-essential appliances left on standby i.e. oven; printers; computers; radios
  • Non-essential fridges turned off in quieter months
  • Dishwasher used on Eco cycle, appliance A +++ Rated

 

  • Recycling/ Waste
  • Guests given option to have towels changed as per our In-house Environmental Statement
  • All toilets have twin flushes –short and long flushing
  • All towelling/cotton/personal washing are line dried where practicable
  • All taps have water savers fitted
  • Bed linen is laundered by local company that operates energy efficient machines and delivers and collects our laundry
  • Tissues in Guest Rooms are recycled paper
  • Guest Room waste is sorted and recycled accordingly
  • Some furniture in guest rooms up-cycled
  • E-clothes used removing need for excessive use of chemical cleaning products & water usage
  • Steam cleaner used for cleaning all hard floors with no chemicals
  • Compost kitchen and garden waste where possible, otherwise garden waste collected
  • Weekly collection for all cardboard and glass, also use local facility 500 mtrs away
  • We make good use of the clothes and shoes recycling at charity bins provided by the council in local car parks
  • We recycle worn sheets within the house
  • Logs used have been recycled from joists removed from house during renovation/re-build
  • All paper reused where possible
  • Molton Brown hand wash in Suite bathrooms, are refilled rather than replaced on guest leaving
  • Eco printer used and recycle printer inks
  • All Magazines from guest rooms and public areas are given to local Charities
  • Glass jars are given to local jam maker
  • We support local charities with Auction items and donations to raffles/prizes
  • Garden landscaped using reclaimed pontoons from a local dockyard and scaffolding boards

Communication

  • We have an online booking system which removes the need for any paper and postal services, emails only are sent
  • All information pertaining to Pebble House is fully available on our website, we therefore have no printed literature/brochures, emails only are sent
  • Public transport details are given on our website and are available in all Guest Room folders
  • We promote local electric car Taxi company in St Austell (5 miles)
  • For bike hire we recommend – Pentewan Valley Cycle Hire 01726 844242
  • Mevagissey has excellent local transport links, either by bus, boat or plane. You can even leave the car at home.
  • Great Western trains arrive into St Austell (6 miles); bus from St Austell to Mevagissey every half an hour; Ferry from Fowey to Mevagissey (weather and time of year dependent) ; planes from within UK to Newquay airport (approx. 25 mins away)
